In 1926, a group of business leaders in Zululand made a simple but powerful decision to come together. From that moment, the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI) was born, an organisation dedicated to protecting and stimulating the local economy while representing the interests of business across the region.
One hundred years later, the Chamber remains standing as one of the most enduring institutions in Zululand’s economic landscape.

The Early Years: Laying the Foundations (1926 – 1950s)
The Zululand of the 1920s was vastly different from the industrial hub we know today.
Commerce revolved around agriculture, small trading enterprises, and the growing port activity along the northern KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Business leaders recognised the need for coordination, advocacy, and collaboration, particularly when engaging with government and regional authorities.

A Modern and Inclusive Voice for Business (2010s – Today)
In recent years, ZCCI has continued to strengthen its role as the voice of business in Zululand, providing networking opportunities, business services, training programmes, and platforms that support businesses to grow and connect particularly small businesses.
The ZCCI through industry support now has a protracted mandate that addresses everything from skills development for SME’s, business development, labour relations and holistic economic development.
Through these initiatives, the Chamber continues to protect and stimulate the local economy while representing the interests of its diverse membership.
But perhaps more importantly, it continues to build relationships, the true currency of business success.
Every era of ZCCI has been shaped by leaders who gave their time, insight, and vision to ensure the Chamber remained relevant and impactful.
Presidents and executive committees across generations have guided the organisation through changing economic climates, evolving industries, and shifting national landscapes.
Today, under the leadership of its current executive committee and staff with President Hlengiwe Mvubu at the helm, the Chamber continues that legacy, championing collaboration between business, government, and community.
Leadership may change with time, but the purpose remains the same, to serve and strengthen the business community of Zululand.
This major milestone is a reminder of the power of collective effort. From small traders in the 1920s to global industries operating in Zululand today, the Chamber has stood alongside businesses through every stage of growth and transformation.
