Our history

History of the Chamber

The Zululand Chamber of Commerce was initially founded on the 8th October 1926 at a preliminary meeting chaired by C.F Adams.

The name was then changed to the Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry at an Annual General Meeting held in Mtunzini on 24 November 1962.Then at a meeting of the Joint Executive Committee of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Natal Chamber of Industries held on 23 October 1992 the name was changed to the Zululand Chamber of Business. On 23 April 2008 a resolution was passed under chairmanship of Mr Phiwo Tango changing the name from the Zululand Chamber of Business to the Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

In the late 1980’s when floods devastated the region, the local corporate community, through the Chamber, contributed towards the establishment of the Rural Foundation to assist the victims of disaster. In the mid 1990’s the rural Foundation became the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation ZCBF. Together, the ZCB established the Business Development Centre (BDC). Business Against Crime was also established as a result of an initiative of the Chamber in response to community and business needs.

While the Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry is autonomous to the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation, the Foundation community park continues to provide a home for its associated organisations.

The Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry continues to enjoy a close relationship with the Foundation while Business Against Crime no longer reports to the Foundation.

The Zululand Chamber of Commerce & Industry continues to grow with increased membership and during 2009 the Chamber Executive Committee had 19 sub committees reporting to it.At the Executive Committee meeting held on the 8th August 2007 under the chairmanship of Mr Garth McCartney, the Chamber took the decision to become affiliated with SACCI (South African Chamber of Commerce & Industry, formally known as SACOB).
