In a collaborative and decisive step towards restoring civic pride and improving the state of the town, the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI), led by its President and Municipal Manager and City officials recently conducted a walkabout throughout the town. This ongoing initiative aimed to identify gaps and city management issues affecting the Richards Bay Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas.

The walkabout, which included the ZCCI and COU Officials highlighted a list of concerns that continue to impact the town’s image, safety, and overall investor confidence. These included waste management, illegal street trading, water wastage, public drinking, and non-compliance with by-laws.
“The ZCCI represents businesses within the City and it is our priority that our members operate in an environment that feels safe, clean and condusive for their businesses to thrive. Cleanliness, by-law enforcement, and visible policing are non-negotiables if we want to attract sustainable investment and revive the local economy,” said ZCCI President, Hlengiwe Mvubu.
Key hotspots were flagged during the walkabout and the Municipal Manager Mr Phakama Mhlongo and his team committed to presenting a plan to business sector that will prioritise sustainable waste and city management. Mr Mhlongo is committed to seeing the City restored to its former glory and creating a favourable city to work and live.
ZCCI called for stronger collaboration between business, law enforcement, and waste management teams. The Chamber emphasized the importance of consistent monitoring, swift action on non-compliance, greater urgency and transparency around the management of urban spaces.

The walkabout marks the beginning of a broader campaign to reclaim and rejuvenate the towns, next is eMpangeni and Alton industrial district.ZCCI confirmed its intention to work closely with the municipality on a structured action plan, backed by regular monthly review meetings and community engagement.
The Chamber urged all stakeholders, including local residents, to take pride in the town and play their part in reporting issues, respecting public spaces, and supporting efforts to build a cleaner, safer, and more functional City of Umhlathuze.
